Summer Greetings, Reader!
Taking a break from watering my garden in this heat wave 🥵, and all of my unfinished summer cleaning projects (Hello, fridge!), to hop into your inbox with some great tips on gut health and managing weight gain during midlife.
Menopause is often accompanied by shifts in metabolism, hormone levels, and body composition. Weight gain, particularly around the belly, is a common concern of many of my clients.
Trust me, all these body changes of midlife ain’t easy, but if we survived puberty, I’m certain we will also make it through to the other side of menopause.
But, here’s the thing…I don’t just want you to survive! Heck no, I want to see you thriving! Instead of just offering advice based on calorie restriction and generic exercise plans, my approach as an herbalist is to look for root causes, a hallmark of a functional medicine approach to wellbeing.
My Approach To Gut Health
As an herbalist with training from Dr. Aviva Romm, M.D., a leading functional medicine doctor and herbalist in women’s health, my approach to gut health emphasizes identifying and addressing the underlying causes of your health imbalances, rather than just easing your symptoms. In the context of menopausal weight management, this means we will consider factors like:
- Hormone Imbalances: Estrogen decline can affect metabolism and fat distribution.
- Gut Health: An imbalanced gut microbiome can impact nutrient absorption, inflammation, and weight.
- Stress and Sleep: Chronic stress and poor sleep can disrupt hormone balance and increase cravings.
- A Personalized Nutrition & Herbal Protocol: Tailored to meet your Individual needs based on your goals, genetics, lifestyle, and health history.
Dietary Strategies for Weight Management
Prioritize Whole Foods:
- Focus on nutrient-dense, unprocessed foods.
- Load up on colorful vegetables and fruits.
Balance Macronutrients:
- Include lean protein at every meal to support muscle mass and satiety.
- Choose healthy fats like avocado, nuts, and olive oil.
- Limit refined carbohydrates and sugary drinks.
Personalized Nutrition & Herbal/Supplement Plans: This level of personalized care can help you identify:
- Potential food triggers, which can lead to inflammation, weight gain, etc.
- Ways to incorporate phytoestrogens from foods (e.g. flax and soy)
- Additional herbs & dietary supplements that can support healthy digestion and ease symptoms
Lifestyle Modifications for Hormone Balance and Stress Reduction
- Prioritize Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine and create a sleep-conducive environment.
- Manage Stress: Practice stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or spending time in nature.
- Support Gut Health: Consider incorporating probiotic-rich foods or a high-quality probiotic supplement to support a healthy gut microbiome.
- Limit Alcohol and Caffeine: These substances can disrupt sleep and exacerbate hormone imbalances.
